Mitchel Street is a narrow street connecting Parnell St. to the centre of town - O'Connell St. and Gladstone St. At its western extremity is the Main Guard. At its eastern end stood the East Gate, long gone. It is more familiarly known to the people of Clonmel as The Narrow Street.

It was previously known as Dublin Street, and before that, as Sheelane or Sheelin Street. Before that again, it was known as Hawke Street, named after an Admiral Hawke.

Mitchel St, aka "The Narrow St." is one of the narrowest in the town. It connected the Main Guard to the East Gate.
