henry3rdRight to hold an annual fair was granted by Henry III, indicating that Clonmel was by then a well-established town. 1225   1225

Francis of Assisi dies.
othoDeGrandisonOtho de Grandison (1238-1328) of Switzerland
took over the administration of the Manor of
Clonmel from the  De Burgo family, who had
fallen out of favour with the king.
De Grandison instituted the building of the town
walls and fortifications. Tolls were levied to pay
the costs by way of tolls, from 1298-1308
1263   1265 1st English Parliament called into session by Earl of Leicester

2ndDukeOrmondeOne James Butler was made Earl of Ormond by Edward III, and given the rights of a Palatinate king. His caput (HQ) was located in Clonmel.
At that time the Desmonds were Lords of the Manor of Clonmel, and the presence there of the Ormondes caused great friction between the families.

henry-viii-3The Reformation caused great changes
throughout Ireland. In 1539, many bishops
and clergy converted to the Anglican faith
and accepted Henry VIII  as the head of the
church of Ireland. From then on, any churches
and monasteries that resisted had their
properties and lands either confiscated or
sold. Priests were summarily executed or exiled.

clonmel-coatofarmsBy Royal Charter, Clonmel becomes a Free Borough, 5 July, under a Charter of Incorporation granted by order of James I.

1608   1607 Flight of the Earls from Lough Swilly, Donegal, Ireland.

OliverCromwellSeige of Clonmel by Oliver Cromwell, began on 27 April. Duke of Ormonde later lost his Palatinate owing to his continued Catholicism.

1650   1650 William III of Orange is born.

2ndDukeOrmondeOn 2 April, Duke of Ormonde regained his
palatinate
following the "Restoration" of
Charles II to the throne. The Palatinate was
finally extinguished in 1716, with full control
returning to the British monarch.

1662   1661 The body of Oliver Cromwell is exhumed and subjected to a posthumous execution.
