Otho de Grandison (1238-1328) of Switzerland took over the administration of the Manor of Clonmel from the De Burgo family, who had fallen out of favour with the king. De Grandison instituted the building of the town walls and fortifications. Tolls were levied to pay the costs by way of tolls, from 1298-1308 |

One James Butler was made Earl of Ormond by Edward III, and given the rights of a Palatinate king. His caput (HQ) was located in Clonmel.

By Royal Charter, Clonmel becomes a Free Borough, 5 July, under a Charter of Incorporation granted by order of James I.
Seige of Clonmel by Oliver Cromwell, began on 27 April. Duke of Ormonde later lost his Palatinate owing to his continued Catholicism.
