Introduction to the main content.

Shop Occupants, Street and Lane Names

Most Clonmellians can remember recent occupants of the shops in our main streets, and might well be interested in earlier occupants and the businesses/trades they carried on.

Such information is provided for O’Connell St., Gladstone St., Parnell St., Mitchel Street and Irishtown.

The street names themselves reveal quite a lot about the town’s occupants and its allegiances too, through the name changes that have been imposed over the years.

Lane names are of interest too, and were often named after individuals, the reasons for which may be long lost.

Old and New Photos

Included are a range of photos that are the essential ingredients of a website such as this.

I have roughly categorised them, separated into galleries based mostly on the streets where the iphotos were taken, and also some miscellaneous galleries for photos that do not fit into such categories.

Public and Private Buildings

There is a listing of public buildings, and also the private dwellings of the great merchant/ business families of the past.

Some information is provided about the age and usage of these buildings.

Miscellany

Anything that doesn’t fit elsewhere goes here.
There’s an old Dance Programme for Hillview, dated 1945.
A little of the history of Clonmel is included too, just enough to impart the basic facts and dates, hopefully not enough to bore. A timeline shows the main events that occurred in Clonmel and further afield.
Some excerpts from the book “My Clonmel Scrapbook“, (compiled by James White in the early 1900’s) are included.
